Small Business Round Table with Congressman Dan Donovan

Recently I was invited for a follow up meeting with Congressman Donovan in his Staten Island office after my visit to his Washington DC office during Small Business Week eBay DC Fly-in 2017.  Ed Varuolo of Hypno-Tronic Comics and Tariq Zaid of Richmond Hood Company  and I talked to the Congressman about Staten Island development, taxes, the proposed internet tax, and proposed changes to the health care system and how they would affect us and our small businesses.

We appreciated a chance to voice our concerns and to make the point that NY and Staten Island has many small businesses both brick and mortar and online.  Big issues can sometimes have a crushing effect on us as people think of the large corporations and forget the ‘Mom and Pop’  size places.  More work needs to be done and we will continue to make sure our voices get heard.

Thanks to Congressman Donovan for meeting with us, Patrick Ryan for setting it up and Henry Salmon of Equity Valuation Associates, Steven Grillo of the SIEDC, Dean Balsamini of the SBDC, and Linda Baran of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce for their contribution and support.

Upcoming Photo Shoot at Amendment 18

Hey Viv ! has been asked to bring some our most charming fashions to a photo shoot at Amendment 18, Staten Island’s newest Speakeasy Bar.

At the shoot, Photographer Jeff Mason will capture the beautiful Leanne Surace and Nancy Corrigan, both singers at the club, posed in the period ambiance of Amendment 18. Think smoky back room, a fitted pencil dress and veiled hats.

Watch our social media for the pictures as Hey Viv ! Retro goes to Amendment 18 !

Flashback – a Far Out Photo Op

Recently I was asked to take part in a fun project with Elaine Mendez and the Labyrinth Arts Collective.  Elaine wanted to add some pizzazz to the Collective’s upcoming “Retro Art Show”   and she asked me to come up with ideas.

“The Retro Show” is an exhibition which gives homage to art styles from the 1960’s – 1970’s so I thought,  why not set up a photo shoot with props, scarves, shades, hats and clothing from the hippy to disco era. Let people get dressed up, take pictures, and post it to social media.

Here’s what I came up with….

Show the world how Groovy you are at Hey Viv’s “Flashback – a Far Out Photo Op” at the Labyrinth Arts Collective Retro Art Show.  Try on some trippy beads and disco threads, take a picture and Post It !

To make it even better, I am collaborating with Nadette Stasa from Every Thing Goes Clothing.  ETG has fun costume and are experts at putting together a fun, feather, glitter, tie dye, beaded, and groovy experience. I had a fun evening at the store picking out the fringed, the shiny, and the wild fashions we love from the 60’s and 70’s.  Thanks Nadette !

Bad Woods – Vintage for mwestdances

I am currently  working on costumes for <<bad woods>> a new dance performance by choreographer Melissa West of mwestdances.  Ms. West recently contacted me about providing a vintage look for her dancers using 1950’s dresses and lingerie.  She described to me a vision of dark and light and mystery.  After conversations and rehearsal meetings we decided on a muted pink, cream and ivory color palette with touches of blue grey.  Cotton day dresses are mixed and layered with lace slips to provide a contrast against the dark woods.

Now the fittings and rehearsals begin in earnest…..

In <<bad woods>>, choreographer/director Melissa West explores the liminal emotive space that resides in the woods. Three dancers build on a soundscape that delves into dualities of light and dark, the night, the mysteries and enigmatic states of wildness that exist within the feminine; the constructs and unraveling of performativity.

Behind the Scenes at Hub 17 Photo Shoot

Rachel, Katrina, and Viv

“Clash of the Decades” Photo Shoot by Hey Viv ! at Hub 17

We recently invited Hey Viv customers to a spontaneous photo shoot fashion show at Hub 17 Gallery with photographer Ken Graham of Kenneth Paul Media. We put out racks of Hey Viv ! clothing from the 50’s to the 90’s and encouraged everyone to have fun creating their own look.  We’ve been posting the pictures on our HeyVivRetro instagram account so check them out.

And here’s the behind the scenes team that helped pull it off.  Rachel (in the picture above, on the left) was in charge of coordinating the clothing and props and making sure it all ran smoothly. She worked the racks and helped people pick out what they wanted to wear.   Katrina (in the middle) brought her fun and funky spirit and cool shoe collection. Katrina was good at adding just the right accessory to the right person.   She made sure everyone felt welcome and tried on something new.   And Viv (on the right) was the ‘in house’ cheerleader for the posing and picture taking part.  It’s not easy to get in front of the camera when you’re not used to it so Viv made everyone laugh and relax so they all showed “their good side” to the photographer.

Ken and Katrina

Here’s our patient and creative photographer, Ken Graham of Kenneth Paul Media  He put everyone at ease and made the Photo Shoot fun and relaxing.  We love working with him !

Erin Kelli

And lest we forget – who was that wacky spirit that helped this idea grow and come to fruition ?  Yes, it’s Erin Kelli – artist, producer, free spirit and all around ‘get it done’ gal.  Erin was in charge of graphics and promotion.  She also brought lots of friends to the shoot and got everyone psyched !  Thanks Erin – you look great in everything !
